simply ask the dentist when you go. it depends on how deep the cavity is and also how you tolerate pain.

if it's not deep, i wouldnt' have novocaine. i've had them done both ways. once i started out without novocaine, but halfway through it started hurting and i asked them to give me some.

and another time, for an extraction, they kept giving me novocaine but it never did take effect. they gave me 2 shots, then later 2 more shots, and finally i said "just pull it!" and they did. ( i was about 12 then) no big deal.

My husband had a filling about a month ago, and he didn't get any novocaine. He said it did hurt for just a short time, but was glad he didn't use novocaine because that makes him feel bad for half a day.

Never. I don't use any gas or novocaine for deep root cleanings either. Bring on the pain!

I did get numbed when they pulled 10 of my teeth to make room for braces. wisdom teeth and four molars up front (2 were just baby teeth they popped out but they had to get them to cut the teeth out under them)

No, I don't. I hated the shot so much, a dentist suggested, when i was 10, that I stop getting it. Have never had it since and I think it's fine.

Yes, of course. It would be torture otherwise. Ever see "Marathon Man" with Dustin Hoffman? Eeesh.
