I am doing research on learning and teaching for my instructional leadership course. What do people want to learn? How will you go about doing this? If you learned something recently, what process did you go through? Give me time it took to learn skill, if you had books, teachers/instructors, etc.

Concepts I like to learn about:
1. educational practices
2. history (people, wars, etc.)
3. words (new words, origins of common phrases, etc.)
4. politics
5. the legal system, laws, etc.
6. medicine (the brain, strange diseases, etc.)
7. religions
8. sociology
9. technology (usually related to computers)
10. general house and car maintenance and repair (I wouldn't say I WANT to learn these things, but that I want to learn them when I NEED to)

The most recent concept I sat down and studied was the affects of poverty on children and their learning. I learned through lecture, watching videos, dialoguing with colleagues, and reading handouts. (I attended an 8-hour inservice on this topic.) I would not say I learned very much because I grew up poor, so I already knew some of the issues facing our students. Secondly, I did not agree with much of what I was 'taught,' so I mentally critiqued what I heard and did not integrate certain ideas into my mental construct of poverty. (Sorry, I don't think poor people have no abstract thought.)

The most recent skill I can remember learning was probably how to lay floor tile. Learning how to just put the tiles down probably took like five minutes. (My father-in-law showed me, explaining what he was doing as he did it, then I tried it while he watched and advised, then I kept on going with him around to ask for help when I needed it.) However, if I lay floor tile again, I will absolutely need to be retaught how to find the middle of the room or how to deal with going around floor vents, etc. I guess you could say I didn't actually 'learn' that part, as I don't remember how to do it!
