There are many types of mp3 players on the market and some very good brands availble.but to answer your question you have to understand that there aretwo types of of mp3 players and you have to decide which one is for you.
One type is called a flash memory player, they are very small and also have small capacities as well (upto 8 gigs). the advantage to these players is that they have good battery life ranging from 15 to 50 hours, and also they have very few moving parts so they are ideal for people who like working out in the gym or jogging.the disadvantage of these players is that due to thier size they can be lost very easily and they are feature limited and storage space limited. Good examples of players such as these are., samsung yh-Z5,creative zen V, Cowon F2,sony nw-s200.

The second type of mp3 player is called a hard drive player.
The hard drive on these players are similiar to computer hard drives so you can't move them excessively(you can wlk with them). the advantage of these players is that they have large storage space (from 30 to 160 gigs), to give you an example a 30 gig can hold upto 15,000 songs.also these players can do virtually everything, play video, play music,fm radio, voice recorders, show photos. these are great for people who travel allot. Good examples of these are the creative vision:m, the new microsoft zune (coming),toshiba gigabeat s,archos av 500,cowon a2

I would not recommend an ipod for several reasons, one of which is that the ipod has drm locks so apple controls how many players or computers you can play your music on,if you have more than two computers or players you may have to purchase
your song twice from itunes(which is not fair). also ipods have faulty batteries which fail within the first 18 months of ownership
you can do a google search and find the number of lawsuits apples have for this problem. Itunes is the only program you can use with your ipod,so if your computer has a problem with the software there will be no way to put music onto your player.
Ipods also are very expensive but offer less than other music players,no radio,no voice recorder, less music format compatibility, not compatible with music services such as mtv urge, rhapsody, yahoo music..etc

I would recommend the ipod over everything else. There is the tiny ipod shuffle that comes in silver and can hold 240 songs (1GB) the drawbacks are: it doesn't have a screen. Then there is the ipod nano first there is the silver nano that can hold 500 songs (2GB), then the special edition red, blue, green, pink and silver can hold 1000 songs (4GB) then the top of the line nano is black and can hold 2.000 songs. If you were to buy one of these then get the second generation nano or shuffle because the shuffle is smaller and the nano comes in colors instead of black and white and can hold more songs for less the price. Then there is the ipod video the 30GB version comes in white and black and a special edition u2 version(black with red click-wheel) that can hold music, photos, videos, TV shows, movies and now games it can hold 7,500 songs. Then there is the 80 GB version that does everything the 30GB does but can hold 20,000 songs and is thicker.
shuffle-$80
nano 1GB-$150 4GB-$200 8GB-$250
ipod video-30 GB- $250 80GB- $350

Overall I recommend the ipod nano 4GB because it has just the right amount of songs and can slip in you pocket.

iriver is pretty good if you dont care about looks. i reccomend the creative zen vision m. best player ever made. and i have facts to support that.

262k color screen vs ipods 62k. the zens is hd lcd.

better sound quality, the zen is made by creative labs which makes speakers and the worlds best sound cards.

it is more durable and also its bettery doesnt die in a year like ipods due

your not stuck with itunes.

you can get music VERY cheaply, say $5/month for unlimited downloads.

it has more features: fm radio, supports 7 video codecs vs ipods 2.

has zoom on pictures and videos.
