My grandpa used to tell us "Bear Tales" all the time. Here are a few of his (supposedly they really happened);
Way back when, when there were no cars, or even electricity there lived a young man. He'd fallen desperately in love with a woman around his age whom lived in another town. As often as he could, he would ride bareback to her town and visit with her. Late one night after a visit with his gal he was riding home. A lantern in one hand, and a shotgun in the other (In case he ran into trouble). As he got to the foot of a particularly tall hill in the road, he saw somethin' comin' towards him on the road. His grip tightened on the gun, ready to shoot if this figure became threatening. As he closed in on it he began to realize that it was something he'd never seen before. He slowed, hoping it would veer off of the road, but it just kept coming. Closer....closer.....closer. Suddenly it was upon him, and he was so terrified that he kicked his horse in the flank and rode off as fast as that horse would go. When he reached his home, he went straight to bed, but he could not sleep. Had he really just seen what he thought he'd seen? He pictured it again in his mind, it had the body of a dog, tail and all, but it's head was it's most disturbing feature. It's face really. The face of his girl's father. As he drifted off to sleep he tried to tell himself, that he'd been sleep deprived, or that maybe he and his brother's had had too much to drink. When he awoke the next morning, he didn't eat breakfast, he went straight to his girl's house. There he found her cryin' her eyes out, hysterical. In the next room lie her father, dead from a stroke.
Pretty good huh? Here's another.
Same young man, same beautiful girl of his. Coming home one particularly stormy night. Every thunder crash made his horse rear up, so, seeing this old abandoned school house he decides to take a rest. Wait the storm out. He hops the few steps onto the porch and stands in the doorway holding his horses lead. The lightning shakes the earth and his horse bucks, and he almost believes that he saw something behind him. But he was known by his friends to be an imaginative young man, so he puts it out of mind. Another crash, the horse dances about, and he gets the same feeling like he'd seen something, only a little more distinctly. Crash, there it was again! Closer this time. Flash, and again even closer. He stands there convincing himself that it's a mind game he's playin' with himself. He waits there, another minute longer until he feels the slightest trace of someone's breathe on the back of his neck. Without even thinking he jumps on his horse and gallops off in a random direction. After finding the road home, he keeps thinking about the incident. Was he playin' games with himself? No, if he really felt it, then it had to be one of his buddies tryin' to spook him. Then the thought of his cowardly retreat came to mind, he'd catch hell for that later. Farther up the road somethin' catches his eye. Two lights, almost looking like they're floating. He feels around the saddle for his shotgun, growing more desperate to find it with every passing second. Finally the figures of two men appear beside the lanterns up ahead and he relaxes a little, still on guard. As the men begin to realize he's there comin' up the road, they holler to him, "Hey there, nice night eh? Say, you seen anything strange about here?" The young man ponders whether he should give the details of his not so heroic actions a while ago. "I can't be sure, but somethin' ain't right about that old school house yonder." The men thank him and head off in the direction he points out only to stop short and call him back. "She didn't spook ya did she? You was ridin' awful quick comin' up here." The young man didn't want to lose what little pride he was grasping to, so he answered, "Nah, I just told my pa I'd be home for early chores. Who is 'she' now?" The men chuckle to themselves and tell him, "She's our mama. Went crazy a while back, an' runs off sometimes. We figured she'd be out here. It's where we always find her."
I'm creeping myself out because I'm in my basement so, I hoped I helped and have a great party!

You mean the movie or a book? Poe is ok, considering written stories. Films? Scream is quite good, The Ring, and now I'm gonna watch Dark Water, as long as there is a daylight around. Lately, at night, I was watching "Emily Rose", and that was not a good idea...;) But the film is also OK.
Have fun!
