in reality we have a confusion translating the meaning of hackers..when we hear the term hackers, into our mind comes people who gain access into other peoples computer systems illegally.. however this is not the real case..
hackers are people who work to protect highly confidential networks and computer systems from been penetrated by crackers..crackers are the people who really gain or try to gain access illegaly...
companies like Microsoft would higher hackers to check their services and their networks and computers to see if they have any loop holes.. these hackers will think like crackers and try to find loop-holes, and if they find, that is when the programmers would create a patch and update the system
hope u got a clear idea!

You could work for the government or military and gather intelligence on terrorists and criminals, chase and outwit other hackers, and disrupt the daily activities of nuclear-weapons-making rogue nations. The air force, CIA, NSA, FBI, etc. all could use good people.
Or you could work in security and design firewalls and other measures to keep hackers out of billion-dollar businesses. You could make a lot of money with companies like Microsoft, Symantic, McAfee, Yahoo!, The Pentagon, etc.

Yes there is a legal profession. They are known as ethical hackers. They try to hack into a sytem or network as well but their intent is not to cause any harm or to steal information but rather to help a company or organisation find any security flaws with their system so that they may correct it.
illegaly, they may try to gain access to information such as credit card numbers etc and use it for thier own purposes.

"legal hackers" are hackers employed by large companies to test out and help develop their internet security systems. "illegal hackers" can steal money from different bank accounts by hacking and making illegal transactions.

Not a hacker per say. You can seek employment with large companies and use your talents to reinforce their firewalls/security to keep out other hackers.

Yeah, it's called IT...lol.
Most hackers seem to be 14 year old anarchists in Switzerland with wealthy parents.
