Can someone explain to me why they start selling concert tickets several months, sometimes a year in advance?

I've never understood this. e.g. Beyonce's concert is in June 2007 but they've already started selling these tickets.

Imagine buying those tickets and something happens to you e.g. you die!!!

After all nobody knows what the future holds.

It costs a lot of money for bands to travel around with their gear & support staff. I think tix go on sale so early so that all costs are covered, not only that, it gives people something to look forward to, who cares if it is next week or next year, the anticipation is there. Try being a little more positive, its true that we dont know what the future holds but why let that stop you from buying concert tix to a band you really like, its not going to make a difference to you if your dead so why worry over it now? Rock on...

Major acts need a guarantee the venue will be available. If they're planning a world tour, the logistics are immense - is the venue available? Do we need money up front? Etc.

Wow, you're cheerful. I think it's because they want to give people time to actually work out if they like the person or not. We're only human. We're a little stupid. It takes more than one time listening to a CD to work out if we like it or not. The real answer is I have no idea.

It gives them plenty of time to cancel if there are not enough ticket sales.
