I am assuming you don't have a compass in this example. There are several ways and all use the sun. You can stick a stick in the ground and use its shadow to note the movement of the sun then decide where is NSEW. You can use the sun at a particular time of day to compare with your watch and provided you know the time you can work out south (then correspondingly north.)

Greetings!

So you are lost in the Sahara Desert, and need to get out. Simple providing you have the time and energy and provisions.
The predominant winds are blowing west to east. Look at the newly formed undisturbed ripples in the sand. the are showing you West on the sharp side of the ripple and East on the sloped side of the ripple. Now if you face the sloped side North will be on the left and South on the right.
If you are familiar for example the general geography of the region in this case the Sahara, you might want to walk to the North. You will know you are heading toward the Mediterranean Sea. This will make your trek cooler and will enhance the chance of finding water in the sand one or two feet down.

Good Luck
PS bring plenty of sun screen

You'd have a compass if you've made the decision to walk in the desert. Or a GPS or a map. Also if you're walking there, you must know where you're going or where you want to go.

Heading east or west according to the sun or towards water sounds like a winner to me.'

The sand is the worst obstacle ,of course u would like to get where u want to go. Look at the sand Dunes they will be nice and round on the up wind side. U can only drive in the prevailing wind direction. The round side is hard and the drift side is soft. u can go down the soft side but never will u be able to go up it.

the sun is the easiest point of reference in the desert and as it travels east to west those would probably be the best directions to choose. Of course, unless you know which desert you're in you're probably screwed

I believe it would depend on where you might want to go. That would be your first decision. Than I would use one of the following methods.

Compass
GPS
Sun during day.
Moon and Stars at night.
Follow the camel trails.
