I want to buy a computer compatible with my 7 year old Compaq desktop, which has Windows XP Pro. I want a laptop I can network with this old desktop. I have been doing research, and think I want a Toshiba Laptop. I want a 17" screelaptop for 90 % home use, 10% travelling with it.

When I buy this laptop I'll probably keep it at least 7 to 10 years. (When I buy a decent computer, I tend to keep it forever and ever)
I watch a lot of DVD movies, but do No Gaming at all.
I use Microsoft Office a lot.
I type and fax out / send out a lot of letters.

I plan to keep the laptop up and running almost continuously, I very seldom turn a computer off.
Should I try to get a " Pentium M" because they are faster ?
I am considering Toshiba Satellite 17 in. Should I buy a laptop off the internet?
Why do Toshiba laptops seem to come equipped with crappy software?
Should I try to buy a custom - built laptop?

Any suggestion

I agree with Pathfinder.
A laptop is different from a desktop computer. You cannot upgrade and fix it as easily as a desktop computer. For example, if your desktop monitor dies, then you can just buy a new or used one. You can't say the same thing with a laptop.
As time goes by, technology gets phased out faster. Also, software requirements keep getting worse. In the 80's you used to keep the same computer for years, but since the 90's, that has changed. If you do get a laptop, it is probably better to get one suited to your needs and then sell it when it starts to get old. This is better than buying the most powerful one available and trying to keep it as long as possible.
I have a desktop computer and an M70 Toshiba Satellite laptop. The laptop isn't powerful, but my uses for it don't require a fast computer. As for the software, all laptops come with crappy software. In fact, just about ALL software these days are crap. I've been programming since the early 80's, so I know.

Your dreams are totally unrealistic. For one thing, no laptop computer can last 7-10 years. The keyboard springs, and other components will wear out way before that, even with medium use. Another thing, a computer can become obsolete when compared to current models in about one year. There is always some improvement in computers coming out every couple of months.

For the cost, they're fairly well. Toshiba will have to final you a whilst with none main issues. Also, they have got a few further points that different manufacturers do not present on their laptops. These points take a few being used to, however while you do get used to them, they're helpful. Dell carrier is the worst within the enterprise, from my revel in. After your Dell assurance expires, you're lifeless to them.
