I totally agree with most of the answers you have received, with the exception of the one from shadowmyc which simply beggars belief. These " do-gooders " make my blood boil.
1-3 years with parole every 2/3 months for good behaviour, these morons wouldn't know what good behaviour is. They knew exactly what they were doing by committing this crime, and then running off to escape the consequences
And to refer to their development being set back if in prison for more than a year, which could make them re-offend when released, then I say this would certainly make me inclined to locking them up for good, and throwing away the key.
This person concludes, " life is not an option " and sadly for the infant killed that is certainly the case.
I would ensure that they were locked up for life, with no parole, and that way they would definitely not re-offend, and our streets would be a bit safer in the future.

I know many will not agree but I think I would put them in Juvie to the 18 years. Then at 18 years old require them to serve four years in the Armed Services and make them pay 50% of their income as restitution to the family of the 18 month baby.
I believe the 14 yr old did not intend to kill anyone but made a horrible judgment choice. Moreover, my heart breaks for the 18 month family and their loss.

well it all depends and sometime a long prison sentence is not the answer for children which they are still! the problem is that the statistics show that when children regardless of their crime get long cutodial sentences lose hope and just become even worse committing more crimes and will not be able to cope with life on the outside! thats why very few juviniles get sent to prison! but they still should go to prison they did kill a baby!

This is a tough one. I personally would recommend 1-3 years between them (depending on accountability for the crash) in a young offenders' institute with parole options every 2/3 months for good behaviour.
Punishment is a necessity, but to take a kid out of education for more than a year would seriously set their personal development back sharply and probably result in them committing more crimes in the future. What's more, this is manslaughter rather than murder, and the kids are minors. Life is not an option.

You complain about that, but you could complain about a million injustices in the world. It's about the upbringing that kids get these days - which sometimes doesn't exist at all. I would sentence the parents instead (possibly to a parenting course), while leaving the kids with a responsible adult. Besides, whatever the judge gave them would never alter their behaviour, & they'd probably be more resentful for having someone telling them how to behave, anyway.

They should be made to see the Family of the wee one & explain what the hell they thought they were doing & also let the family decide on suitable punishment, Personally i would lock them up throw away the key, But then there are too many good do'ers out there, They were old enough to know what they were doing & i think that thier names should be released, Its all too common nowadays & the Government should have a re-think on this situation, One day it may be one of their own & i bet you they would feel differently then eh

Having seen the report and the fact they did a runner they would be drawing their pensions before they got out of prison.
This is manslaughter and carries a discretionary life sentence which is what I would give them if I was the judge.

No doubt the murder wasn't premeditated. However. Actions have consequences, and they should/will be aware of this. They deserve life, but, they probably will get a nice lovely room in a 'prision' somewhere, councelling to absolve their guilt, and a holiday, somewhere hot to rehabilitate them back into society.....
Meanwhile the parents' souls have been destroyed by the actions one of the worst kind of human vermin known to man.

I would order that they go down to the local morgue and see the body of road crash victims then return to a room where they have to come face-to-face with the victim's parents and see what they have to say for themselves then.

the most important thing is that they face the parents and realise fully that they have taken life and devistated a family
