Atmospheric pollution
Deforestation is often cited as one of the major causes of the enhanced greenhouse effect. Trees and other plants remove carbon (in the form of carbon dioxide) from the atmosphere during the process of photosynthesis. Both the decay and burning of wood releases much of this stored carbon back to the atmosphere. A.J.Yeomans asserts in Priority One that overnight a stable forest releases exactly the same quantity of carbon dioxide back into the atmosphere. Others state that mature forests are net sinks of CO2 (see Carbon dioxide sink and Carbon cycle).
Wildlife
Some forests are rich in biological diversity. Deforestation can cause the destruction of the habitats that support this biological diversity - thus causing population shifts and extinctions. Numerous countries have developed Biodiversity Action Plans to limit clearcutting and slash and burn agricultural practises as deleterious to wildlife, particularly when endangered species are present.

Two major effects of deforestation are:
-- Ecological balance is disturbed
Due to deforestation, animals ,birds and insects lose their habitats.
There is less food for herbivores, so there population decreases.
As a result, Carnivore population also falls due to less herbivores.
Due to no fauna, chances of revival of the lost flora decreases.
The whole ecosystem gets disturbed.
--Less rainfall and global warming
Trees release water vapour in transpiration and increase the moisture content in the atmosphere. So they attract rain. Also they take in carbon dioxide and release life-giving oxygen during the day. But due to deforestation, due to less water vapour, rainfall decreases. Due to less conversion of CO2 into O2, global warming is further increased, which on a long term basis would increase the rate of melting of polar ice caps and snow on mountains leading to flooding of low lying areas, especially coastal areas.

The two main effects of deforestation are climatic change and change in temperature. Forests help in the evoparation of water from the leaves to form clouds and brings rain. The temp. is cool and humid when forests are there, but becomes hot and dry due to lack of trees.

When deforestation happens, there will be lesser tress therefore lesser O2 in the air. When lesser O2 is in the air,the plants and the humans(animals)cannot respire as well as normal. When this happens, animals will hv breathing difficulties and the plants won't be able to transpire and hence it cannot take in water. There are 2 effects in my explanation. But I can't really promise you that this is the major effect but I consider this as the human beings take themselves as more important than the other animals so they state this as a MAJOR effect. So,I hope what I have explained is clear and understandable.

Deforestation brings erosion in its wake, and that brings loss of fertile soil. Another major consequence of deforestation is a lowering in the area's humidity and water retention dues to loss of the trees which held and transpired moisture.

Loss of forest cover due to deforestation may result in the following.
1. Loss of forest cover results in soil losing anchorage especially in hilly areas due to which the soil cover gets eroded in the rainy season. The deposition of this soil layer in low lying areas results in flooding of these areas.
2. The forest cover acts as a cooling medium for the atmosphere. Loss of this cover also results in excess CO2 deposition in the atmosphere . This is also known as Global Warming or Green House effect. This results in melting of polar ice caps. There have been reported instances of whole islands being submerged due to the water levels of oceans being raised.

due to deforestation, nature become unbalanced.oxygen level decreases, pollution increases, rainfall decreases.global warming increases so ice on mountains melt and flood increases.so there are many major effects of deforestation.
