1a) go into folder settings (via control panel) and set to show show both hidden and system folders. Also uncheck the box for "hide protected system operating files" - you'll get a prompt for this one, but select "yes"
1b) Go to the following:
My Computer > documents and settings > (your user name) > local settings > temp
Have a browse through here to get some idea of what your laptop has been used for while you were away, as most will not have properly cleared this area out (this folder contains all IE's browsing history among other things!) properly :)
Also look in the following:
My Computer > documents and settings > (your user name) > local settings > history > ...
This will show any cookies (much easier than the earlier suggested option), as well as all browser history not cleared
(it is this file that you need to to select to view protected system operating files in order to see) Keep in mind that if someone really made an effort to strip incriminating files and history with a 3rd party application (such as any of the ones I use for example), then even an experience techie will have difficulty digging up any dirt for you
Hope this offers some assistance :)
*edit* - just as quick response to those suggesting the disk-cleanup option, the problem with that is that if you don't take the earlier mentions step to make key folders/files visible, that you won't actually be able top see much of the info you are seeking.
You may also want to use the Windows Search tool (first making sure that it has fully system access before searching). Look for both ".htm*" files and "cookies", as this will find instances where someone may have temporarily adjusted the location to where your system was storing its history.

Check your "recent history", often to be found in a drop-down box beside your browser bar.
Of course, if someone's been using it for naughties, they could have erased recent history, in which case you will need to ask someone with a lot more IT knowledge than me!
