Max Weber's classical work is translated into English as "Class, Status, and Power." However, a more accurate translation would be "Status, Position, and Party."
In Weber's time (mid- to late-19th century), one's power in society was defined by his acceptance into the various political parties.
When translated into language that is understood by Americans, power (party) means the ability to control one's circumstances in life. Those who are wealthy and have high status have a great deal of control over the social forces around them. At the other extreme are those who lack political power. They live dreary lives, always at the mercy of those who control the power.
My response to your second respondent would be: Weber was more of a realist, while Durkheim was more the dreamer.
However, personally, I like Durkheim's sociology.

Sounds like a speech a politician would give. They have a lot of power (defined as "the ability to make a difference to someone's life") & abuse it on a daily basis to suit themselves. Sound about right to you?

He could be correct, but in all instances?
'Power' is only that given or granted to those who use it by members of groups or society.
