The first thing is to go to the control panel then system then advanced and click on performance. You can select "adjust for best performance" from there. It will help.
Then you can run msconfig from your run command and turn off all the items that run at startup that you don't want to run in the background. Caution! don't turn off your antivirus or firewall though.
Thoise two changes will really speed you up.
