Fancy tailed guppy's. they are non aggressive, they don't need a heated tank and they can survive almost anything & there are many colors to choose from. But the bread like crazy. If you get them and they have babies, make sure to take them out of the tank and put them in a separate bowl because they will be eaten.
UPDATE: regardless of what "Nunya Biznis" says, guppies do NOT need a heater. he obviousely does not have guppies or done research on them to know this info. Otherwise mine would had died many years ago if that was true. yet they thrive very healthly and continue to have babies like crazy. Guppies have also been an alternitive as pond fish. they eat the mesqitoes. Outside ponds dont have heaters last I knew ,so again...these hardy little fish would have died off long ago if that was true.
guppies have been used for controling diseases caused by masqitoes like malaria & west nile. Guppys can consume 200-300 mosquito larva per day. Guppies also can survive in polluted waters. Thats definately a hardy fish!
Though Guppies originate from South America, today they are found in every inland water body throughout the world, to aid in mosquito control.
and again, last I knew, EVERY inland water body throughout the world does not have heaters in them. sorry, I just had to say it one more time.

But I think the best companion for gold fish are other gold fish.
Only a few of the aquarium plant species can survive in a tank with goldfish, for example Cryptocoryne and Anubias species, but they require special attention so that they are not uprooted.

here is a list of goldfish plants http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/Plants.html
No Loollea, though the female guppy does look almost identical, I am right. though it is alway good to double check someones answer...you just never know. visits the links for proof. I know what the mosquito fish are. it is also mentioned in one of the links...here is a copy and past of it... "Two most common larvae-eating fish are Guppy and Gambusia. Both can consume 200-300 mosquito larva per day. Guppy can survive in polluted waters, while Gambusia lives in fresh water, brackish water and salt marshes. With the presence of larvae-eating fish, mosquitoes and its larva can be reduced, thus can lessen the incidence of malaria." this is the link you will find it at http://www.wis.cgiar.org/rwc/shared/asp/practices/PraOverview.asp?PracticeID=525
Here are the 2 fish in the Wikipedia encyclopedia.
The guppy is mentioned yet again as being introduced to some areas to keep down the mosquito population and help fight malaria.

but my answer of best companion for your fish remains the same..... other goldfish.
Please note: "tropical fish" only refers to its origin and does not neccessarily mean it MUST be kept in "heated" water or it will die.
TROPICAL FISH:
any of numerous small, usually brightly colored fishes, indigenous to the tropics, and often kept and bred in home aquariums.

ok, thats the end of todays lesson.

goldfish will probably eat live plants if you put them in the tank. I would use silk plants. Also, don't put any fish with goldfish. Only other goldfish can go with goldfish. They produce too much amonia for other fish to handle. Even if your amonia levels test fine it can still be a fatal enviroment for other fish. There are many different types of goldfish, I would just add some of these. Goldfish get 12- 24 inches and need 2 gallons of water per inch of fish (ex. 4 inch goldfish needs 8 gallons of water).

other fancy types of goldfish would be best and you'll have to experiment with the plants to find some that your fish dont want to eat, because goldfish root around in the gravel so much they will constantly dig up your plants
and contrary to eyepoppin - guppies are tropical, you must be thinking of gambusia, a native wild fish that looks like a guppy
and is called the mosquito fish

Fish: Paradise Fish (not recomended as they are very aggresive), Comet Tails, Shubunkins, Sunfish, Ryukin Veiltails (found in a variation ofcolours), Pearlscales and Lionheads can all be put together with goldfish.
Plants: Dwarf Anubias, Congensis, Giant Anubias, Water Hyssop, Tropica Swordplant, Java Moss, Java Fern, Giant Vallisneria and Moneywort are all live plants that can be put in with goldfish. Since goldgish like to nibble at aquatic plants it's recommended that you buy plants with leathery leaves such as 'Anubias'. Good luck!

Guppies are tropical, so yes they do need a heater. White cloud mountain minnows are cold water fish though so you can keep them with the goldies.

Some people can have live plants with goldfish and other can't. Goldfish love to eat them, so start out with some of the cheap ones and if they are safe then you can think about the more expensive ones.
