At the heart of your car's air conditioning system is a compressor unit (like in a fridge or freezer). This requires energy in order to operate and the energy comes from the engine (the compressor is driven by a drive belt, just like the water pump). It therefore 'loads' your engine. If you are stationary, and at tickover, switch on your aircon and you'll see the tachometer needle fall slightly as the air con compressor comes on line. On the road you overcome this extra power demand by pressing harder on the accelerator, this in turn increases your fuel consumption for a given road speed.

It's the old story of "you can't get something for nothing".

Some smaller engined cars will have a cut-out so that when you accelerate hard to overtake, the air con switches off momentarily until you back off the accelerator again. The idea is to give maximum engine power to carry out the overtaking manouevre.

The only way to overcome this power demand is not to use your air con except when it is absolutely necessary; _or_ to have a car with a big enough engine that the air con demand is negligible compared with the amount of power (BHP) available from the bigger engine.

The air conditioning system requires a certain amount of engine power to operate. When you turn it on there is less engine power available to accelerate the car. This is perfectly normal and is to be expected.

The power of the Engine DOESN'T drop, just SOME of the Power of the Engine goes to DRIVE the AC Compressor.SO when the AC is OFF,ALL the power will go to the rear wheels instead of some going to the compressor.JUST like when you RUN ALL of your house ELECTRIC appliances, your using more WATTAGE & your BILL goes UP & the POWER Company has more of a LOAD on it Generating plant WHICH inturn uses more FUEL which COST YOU more MONEY $$$
