Funny thing fear is. Fears because of what we don't understand... fears because we have no control of certain desired outcomes... fears of reliving the same mistakes...
Fear says we're human. Fear keeps us in check. Fear helps us maintain our own personal equilibrium and keeps our heads on straight. Fear helps us rethink certain desires and curiosities resulting in wiser decisions. Fear instinctively tells us what fate may lie ahead...
But-
To fear something we want most tells us there are risks involved.
This is only natural- as the risks of failure or heartbreak weigh heavy on our shoulders as we struggle to decide whether or not it's worth the effort or negative outcome of these failures or heartbreaks to achieve what it is we desire most. To remain focused on certain goals, aspirations, and dreams as well as the plans to make them realities that meet our expectations, helps the fear to subside as we feel ourselves progressing ever closer towards these achievements. Having these fears and conquering them makes the journey so much more fulfilling when we get to the end. I do hope this helps.

Some great answers here already - yes, sometimes, we fear that if we ever get what we want the most, we'll live the rest of our lives desperate not to lose it.
Sometimes though, we're actually afraid of being successful. Afraid that we will change if we get what we want, and afraid that there will be expectations placed on us that we don't think we can fulfill. Afraid in essence of swapping the comfortable but unfulfillable quest for the reality of achievement. Wanting something is harmless Getting it puts us in a whole other world, and much of the time we're not 100% sure we either could or should live in that world of achievement and contentment, or that we could carry it off if we got there, and not feel like a child wearing their parents shoes, somehow a fraud in our achievement.

Huh. I don't fear what I want most. I never have. I'm just not built like that. I fear a great many things...but the things I want and desire are exciting and something to strive for. It's a challenge to get what you want, when so often you just get what you need....so perhaps people are afraid to want or desire, because they are so afraid they won't ever get it. Well, pffffffffft to that. They need to pull their head outta the sand have a look around, stand up, and say...fck it...if you want it bad enough...you'll find a way to get it...and if you don't succeed well at least you've bloody well tried! Life is too short to fear what you want.

it would depend if what we want is a thing or a person.
The striving part for material things is like a journey, the trip is the most exciting thing and after we achieve the end.....we look forward to another and another challenge. At least sometimes.
In regards to a person, there is always fear of rejection, the person might be disappointed. But I would go for it anyways...no matter the outcome.

...
I can only speak for myself...
So, i think i fear what i want most because it may not live up to its image in my mind. It could disappoint me. And to want something so much and then it just isn't what i really expected, it's such a letdown. It's like i wasted all that time.
And sometimes i just am scared that when i get what i want, i won't want it anymore...
The chase is far more exciting than the actual capture.
But i guess it depends on what i want...
Happiness. I'm not scared of that and i want it so much that my heart hurts.

Possibly because what would we wish for after that? fear of the unknown or the wanted is a healthy thing- it makes us strong and work for our dreams- If we had everything we wanted Life would be boreing

Once we get what we want we will not have a purpose and we will have to leave the fun behind and go another way, like when you say:"I have wanted to live in London for so long, but now that I am here what happens now?", we are afraid of the consequences of our actions.
