It seems as though everyone quotes this ONE thing Hamlet says.

But do any of you even know what it really means?

If you don't, he's contemplating suicide in one of his soliloquies...

And now that i've enlightened you, will you continue to use this saying? Or will you use caution in the future?

It's just wierd (in my opinion) that the majority of people repeat what they don't understand.

Oh man, do I agree with you. My favorite example of it is when people say that "Money is the root of all evil." Like having money is awful and should be avoided at all costs. *cough* Buncha Morons. The actual verse is "For the love of money is the root of all evil." 1st Timothy 6:10. So basically, have all the money you want...just don't be a greedy slob about it and let it so overwhelm you that it turns into something you love above all else.

It's been a while since I read Hamlet, but I agree, people don't know the real meaning of these words. I don't really use them just because I think the line is overrated, but that's just my opinion.

Hamlet is disappointed in everyone around him and life itself ... So he asks himself is it better TO BE (to live in the world full of evil) or NOT TO BE (not be alive at all)...

that would be a common interpretation of it...

You are absolutely right.
But the play took place in such another time that the meaning of the original saying got lost.
If you place it in this time i would say that it means:ARE YOU OR AREN'T YOU AWARE OF WHAT'S GOING ON AROUND YOU?ARE YOU SO NUMB THAT YOU ARE BLIND??????

Maybe he's questionning whether or not he wants to exist.

I've always thought that that saying sounded similar to Descartes "I exist therefore I am" theory...
