I seek info., in a step-by-step format in an easy to follow guide, how to take my Dell P.C. back to Factory Settings. The operating system is XP & I have all the back-up disks for re-installing software. Assistance, greatly appreciated!

There should be an option in your Start Menu under Dell or Dell Tools for a system restore to bring it back to factory settings ... otherwise place disc one of your original set into the cd drawer and reboot your computer ... when it says "press any key to boot from CD" press a key .... then follow the screen prompts ... make sure you have backed up all your data ... pics docs email etc.

On my Dell you press Ctrl+f11 when the keyboard lights flash on startup. this take you to a screen. Follow easy Instructions from there. Hope this helps. you won't need to reinstall the O/s but you will lose all other data. except the programs that the computer came with when you bought it.

restart your computer and as it is loading slowly pay attention and you push F8 or F10 or something, then you follow the instructions.

Usually there is a copy of windows installation in your D drive, but if you say you have 'discs' check them carefully.

After you restore your computer you may have lost your antivirus and firewall. so you will need to download these quickly as you are unprotected, and you will need to update your version of windows to service pack 2 and many other updates, it is a real pain.

Also some of your programmes will work and some of them won;t so you will have to redownload them and reinstall them, if you are on dial-up this can take days!

This depends.

But normally:

While computer is booting, press Dell, and load Default Bios Settings.

The directions are on the disk or in the paperwork that came with the PC, but they are most likely insert the disk and restart the PC.
