If it direct to the ex then he should do it through a bank standing order as this will show on his statement and hers of the monthly deposits when setting it up with the bank they ask what you want it to say on the statement so you could put child maintenance then it clear. CSA they do take a % and the child always losses out but this would stop any non payments being made so its really how dedicated you bro is.

He can do this either way, if they are on speaking terms he can pay her directly but not a good idea if they tend to fall out quite a bit just in case she then goes to the csa saying he hasn't been paying her, if he opts for this it might be an idea to get her to write a receipt for each payment. If they aren't on speaking terms it's wise to do it through csa!

if your brothers ex is on benefits it will have to go through CSA. For example,if he has to give £10, £10 will be deducted of her benefit and your brothers will be "added on", she'll be no better off. If it works out okay, he could give it to her but may be paying too much or too little. Make sure he gets a receipt because I know someone who paid maiintenence for years, didnt get proof of this and got a massive CSA bill.

If they are friendly now he may be tempted to pay her but that will not give him any future gaurantees. Paying the CSA is the only safe way and legal way i might add to cover himself against future falling out and false backpay claims etc. Good luck.

Through the CSA is official. No chance for her to rip him off.
