I'm an A level student studying with a distance college. I'm studying 6 subjects (Mathematics,Human Biology, Physics, Psychology,English Literature and A Modern Language). I'm age between 15-17, and have been considering getting a weekend job in a book shop, to get money for text books and stuff.

With all the subject that i am taking and planning to get into medical school, should i get a job at weekends. Or should just get money off my parents and just work through my subjects...

Your opinions please..

Get the $$ from your parents of course. You work hard now and enter the course you want. Get a good job in future and repay your parents kindness.

Considering how difficult it is to get into a medical school, you will need to get good grades to be a competitive applicant. This means you will need to put in some quality study time during the weekend while other students are out with friends or working at bookstores. Medical schools only take the top tier college students who have the best grades, and best grades only come from studying harder than the other students.

Those extra hours of studying you are thinking of sacrificing for a $8/hour job, for 2 days a week, could end up costing you a $100,000+ job, that will last the rest of your life.

So, take the money from your parents. You can repaid them by getting a great job in the future and that will make them happy.

There is an article in Yahoo Business today that relates to your question. http://biz.yahoo.com/weekend/great_1.html

I work full time (about 42 hours for me) and go to college full time (12 credits). I have been doing this for years.

First, you would have to discuss your schooling schedule with your employer. If they can't work with you on it, don't bother. School is more important!

Second, don't over do it with college courses. Don't take more than you can handle. It can be very, very stressful (trust me). Take a day off from everything for rest/relaxation. Sometimes it can do a world of good.

College books can be very expensive (just a heads up). If you plan to commute gas can be a killer.

It would be a good idea to get a job to learn responsibility, and if it is only on the weekends you should be ok.

If you can get some money from your parents to help with school go for it. But don't strictly rely on them, they won't always pay your way.

Good luck!
