There are three: Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac and Little Cayman. Grand Cayman is the island where most things are happening: in the capital, George Town, are all the government buildings, including the legislative assembly, the law courts and the library, with a large variety of shops. Other attractions of Grand Cayman are the Seven Mile Beach, the Turtle Farm and the Botanic Park. There is an international airport and a harbour where many cruise ships put in.

Cayman Brac and Little Cayman are normally reached by small plane from Grand Cayman. They are considerably quieter. Little Cayman is good for bird spotting and is the home of the red footed booby. It is also the home of the blue iguana, unique to the Cayman Islands, which actually has right of way on the roads.

When the Cayman Islands were discovered by Columbus just over four hundred years ago there were so many turtles on their shores that they were given the name "Islas de las Tortugas", or "Turtle Islands". The more modern name Cayman comes from a relative of the crocodile bearing that name.
