I turn on the t.v. to the music stations that have no lyrics- its called soundscapes and has soft and mellow music, Try to make it as dark as possible in the room you are sleeping in and I know it sounds corny- but warm milk and make sure your bladder is empty- then do this...
concentrate on your feet tell yourself to relax each toe and with your mind move up to your ankles and your thighs etc.... move up slowly from your feet all the way to your head and with your eyes SHUT meditate on relaxing every muscle in your body with any luck you will be asleep before you reach your shoulders! Don't for get to set your alarm, meditation works...
Deeply breath in between each part of your body while you are doing this excersise 3 times.... nite nite!

For right now, try reading a book, it really does help to put you to sleep (as long as you don't fall in love with the story and feel compelled to keep reading!)
Starting tonight, try taking Melatonin (found in any health food store or at http://www.mynsp.com/leslie_cider/products/guide.aspx?stockNum=2830) about 1/2 hour before you want to go to bed. Some tips:
* Start going to bed at the same time every night to establish a routine that your body will start to recognize and get used to.
* Don't do anything in your bed but sleep. Your body will start to get used to the fact that when you get in your bed it's time to sleep, not to do anything else, which will make it easier to fall and stay asleep.
* Some people are great believers in Feng Shui - a natural way of balance in many different areas of your every day life. Your bedroom may be "out of balance" and a simple shift in your furniture's arrangement may help. (It certainly couldn't hurt! And it's worth a try...) Here's a link about kid's bedrooms, but the tips can apply to all bedrooms http://fengshui.about.com/cs/kidsfengshui/a/kidsbedrooms.htm
* Aromatherapy will help a lot too. Some lavender or chamomile essential oil will naturally help you sleep. (of good quality, either should be around $15.00 - $35.00 for a small bottle. (They last for a very long time.) Avoid EO brands where every oil is the same price, no matter the oil - these are not true essences and won't help.) Some excellent brands on the web are: http://www.mynsp.com/leslie_cider/Products/Search.aspx?Page=products.search and http://youngliving.younglivingworld.com/MainFrame.asp?BodyFrame=products/ProductCatalog_main.asp
* Chamomile tea will also help you sleep if you drink it about 20 minutes before bed.
* As with your bed, try not to do anything in your bedroom other than sleep or dress. You'll train your body that that is the purpose for that room.
Good luck!

When that happens to me, I figure God wants me to pray for people I don't really like. If I end up not getting back to sleep, it softens my heart towards them.
I don't think 4am is too early though, I usually get up and get some busy work done. I also find that when I have PMS, I have insomnia, so I use the awake time to "nest" and get things done. I've also taken 2 extra strength tylenol before bed and for some reason it helps me sleep.....I run out of people to pray for. :)
Sweet dreams!
