Well,I myself was a Railway Engineer looking after the maintence of railway track and should be able to able to give the best abswer. All objects expands due to increase in temperature and steel which is used to make rails is no exceptionHence gaps are kept between two rails so that the rail-heads do not meet each other resulting in non-availability of free space for the rails to expand. When this space is not available, railway tracks may, what is known in technical terms, buckle resulting in serious accidents.

metals expand on heating. during summers the railway tracks expand due to high temperature.
Fishplates or joint bars are usually 60 centimetres (2 feet) long, and are bolted through each side of the rail ends with bolts (usually four, but sometimes up to six.) Small gaps known as expansion joints are deliberately left between the rails to allow for expansion of the rails in hot weather. The holes through which the fishplate bolts pass are oval to allow for expansion.

Railway tracks expand due to heat, they contract in winters.
Here's an interesting fact.
The Eiffel Tower expands about 7 inches in summer due to heat!!

Heat expands most metals. And contracts in the cold too.

Simple, in summer it's hot. And we all know that heat causes metal to expand. Put them together and there's your answer.

It is typically hotter in the summer, and when molecules are exposed to heat they usually expand. It is the opposite when it is cold.

Special pixies appear and spread magic dust on the rails.......no wait! I think it's because metal expands and contracts due to heat!

This is made up of Manganese steel 14%. hence this Mn steels will be normally expandable due to heat.
hence we use Blue metal ( Jally Stones) to avoid this expansion.
