Has to be inexpensive, big, colorful. Will make him/her remember you for a while.
I bought mine a little tent that pops up (like the sunshade for cars) he loved it!
is not heavy or bulky at all you can travel with it or send it.

First, talk to the child's parents -- each three-year-old is different, and you don't want to duplicate the gift, or get something the kid will not like. Or get the size wrong. However, if you want it to be a surprise, you look on amazon.com for toys -- they have age-appropriate categories and reviews.
For shipping, make sure the gift is not fragile and it's not too heavy. Packing with peanuts or airbags is a good idea.
Decide if you want to send a keep-for-a-long-time keepsake, or something the child can use up (and not clutter the house with). My kids loved Play-doh when they were little. If the kid's parents are not anti-sugar, cookies or candy from your area might be fun. There's also a very cool mat that changes color when you wet it. There's a special pen that "writes" in water, and when the mat dries, the mat is clear and you can use it again. Sure saves on paper!
Hope that helps.

A gift voucher so you can buy some clothes or shoes or winter coat when the child needs something... I prefer this because my children end up with lots of clothes and toys then in a couple of months Im having to spend lots of money of clothes and shoes because they have grown so quickly. (By the way you child will benefit)!!

Something with moving parts and noise that will drive his/her parents crazy and delight him/her.
Some ideas - a clickety-clack push lawnmower, a ride on car with noisy bits, Duplo, whistles, toy trumpet, drum set, toy piano, toy guitar
If you want to be kind - dress up outfits (doctor, nurse monster etc), a box of big crayons and colouring books, paints, kids bubble bath and floating toys for the bath, plastic/wood versions of dads tools

send a money chegue to the value you want to spend on the child and let mom or dad choose somthing the child needs either clothing or toy . that way it allows the parent to give somthing on your behalf the child really needs , if nothing is needed then suggest a small bank account for the childs future .

What about buying something that can be bought in your country that can't be bought in the child's.
Perhaps some of the online toyshops would give you some inspiration, they may even deliver overseas.
