quite a mess. - The usual results from the nuclear explosion plus a huge eruption and depending on what sort of volcano it was ie shield (flat) or layer, and how unstable the area was, you could have huge parts of a volcano breaking away and global devastation. - tidal waves... earths crust splitting... the sort of thing Hollywood will probably make a film about.

Or maybe the bomb would jest melt in the magma

Best not to try it really!!!

If the volcano has been dormant for a while you would net be able to drop a a bomb into it. You must remember that a volcano is effectivly a mountain with some cracks in it, wich during an eruption allow for magma to escape as lava.

If for example an a bomb was detonated witin one of these cracks the concequenses would be vast. e.g Mt Etna.

as etna is active there is a vent. drop one down there the volcano would erupt due to flank collapse, like seen at mt st helens in the usa. the resulting eruption would also spew masses of dust, gasses, and radioactive particles into the atmosphere. this will affect the climate of the region and probably the world, by cooling it down. this phenomina has been seen at Pinatubo and also an eruption in the 19th century of Mt Toba in sumatra. The cooling effect saw a drop of 2-3 degrees C in a matter of weeks. These drops in temperature so quickly take many years to restore by which time alot of wildlife and people would die and the concequences will be devastating.

and if you did it at La Palma, the flank collapse would cause a tsunami that would wipe out the eastern sea board and parts of europe

Hope this is of some use

If you detonated the device near or on top of a volcano the earthquakes spawned from the explosion could possibly initiate a series of events that may culmanate in an eruption. The 1980 Mount St. Helens eruption was actually triggered by a landslide, which was caused by a 5.1 earthquake. So it would have to be a very big bomb

Nothing will happen, cos the nuclear bomb will go under the magma

It depends if the volcano is erupting. If it is, an extra big bang, if not, just a 'normal' nuclear explosion!

i mean really....what are you thinking about...throwing a nuclear(!!!!!!!) bomb on a volcano....this is what happens when you get too much free time and start thinking

If magma was already about to break thru the surface in an eruption, could probably speed it up with a big surface detonation.

the nuc would explode as expected, the volcano would only go if it was detonated in the magma chamber, otherwise it is two seperate reactions

It would blow the *f*uck up and there could be serious repercussions i.e. tsunamis or tidal waves, earthquakes. I wouldn't want to be around when it happened but could quite happily watch it on CNN.
