Bob Scarce, whose real first name was Alex, born on 8 June 1885 in Blaxhall, Suffolk, East Anglia, one of England's greatest traditional singers was famous for singing Paddy and the Rope, a song about two hapless would-be church robbers he recorded it in 1953

Tim Hart and Maddy Prior released Summer Solstice in 1971 which has the track Paddy Stole the Rope

Music for the Nation: American Sheet Music attributes the words of the song to Fred Albert and the music to Frank Egerton

Fred Albert (1845 - 1886) was an English music hall vocalist and composer.
