Often times people who are having a hard time, or had a hard time in childhood, do feel the need to knock down people who they feel are doing better than them. Or seem to be jealous of those who have succeeded. It is not uncommon for humans to want to bring others down to their level so they do not feel so low.

I suppose this happens sometimes because people usually feel even more abandoned and lonely and like they don't belong when they see others enjoying themselves and leaving them out. It mainly depends on the person. Some people feel that way, while yet others choose to move on and change the course of their lives. Some people use their feelings and the events of their lives to make them better people, and they're usually the ones defending others when they see them being hurt or treated unfairly.
When you have bad experiences or a difficult childhood, you can either let it define who you are, or you can use it to strengthen you, knowing that you will never allow yourself be like those who hurt you...and you can make life better for yourself and others. It's an individual choice.

Our present experiences are coloured by childhood experiences so this idea is not so far fetched. Tata.
