How did Susan Sarandon's character (Nora's) son really die in "White Palace"?

She said he died of leukemia and (just my luck) I dozed off at the part where James Spader's character found out the truth.

I remember that scene in the movie too. Unfortunately, I remember nothing more than the leukemia. I searched and searched and the most I could find was that he died tragically. Nothing more. I guess I'll have to watch it now!!

He was inebriated and fell into the river. He drowned.
