You need to like your partner and they you.
You need to enjoy their company and they yours.
You need to laugh at the same things.
You need to have trust and faith in your partner and to be worthy of trust and faith - as do they.
You need to respect each other.
You both have to be prepared to compromise.
A relationship is not static - it grows and changes and is molded by the people in it and they are molded as well.
How this growth occurs depends on how much you have invested of yourselves.
It needs to have balance. One partner cannot be always in control. Think of a seesaw - it doesn't work if one person is in control; it takes two.
To sum it up - it takes two people who like, love and respect each other, both putting genuine effort into their relationship, for it to succeed.

Its gonna sound stupid but apart from love and trust obviously, i think the key ingredient is laughter. Whats a relationship without laughter? Its good to have a giggle everyday. x x x

Love and Respect and Honor is all that is needed ! When two people love and respect and honor each other,"everything else "that comes with being in a relationship is there! When one looses respect for the other the relationship won't last very long!

Communication, trust, honesty, respect, patience, understanding and the willingness to compromise when u can't agree on one thing. Spend as much time together doing the things u both love and give each other space when wanting to do your own thing. Last but not least, be each other's best friend.

Trust mainly and then the ability to both give and take. A relationship is work. Don't ask the other partner to do anything that you wouldn't consider doing yourself. Be willing to sacrifice and don't loose faith in each other. Also don't let pride destroy your relationship.
When you have children remember they learn from you. Love each other before you love them. It sounds really selfish, but the kids will grow from your strength and unity.

Solid financial independence from both parties. Most people follow the fantasy that "Love will provide" but the reality is, that never happens. You'd be surprised how much more enriching a relationship can be when neither one of you is worrying about money.

a sense of humour, patience, a lot of hard work. Knowing that you want to stay with this person no matter what happens. But that does not mean staying with him or her if there is any violence either physical or mental. A relationship should be equal.
