How "Middle Aged" are we talking?

I know that during the Renaissance Period women we only starting to come of their own.

Although most European countries still did not allow women to own their own property, they did inherit it from their husbands if they had "small" children who could not be granted the property yet.

Treated as second class citizens and something to be hidden away. Rather like these Muslim countries still treat their women nowadays !
