I am a research and development model shop technician. Big title, but the job description has changed over the past few years. I make prototype parts (brake pads, clutches) and work on small lot production runs, it used to be 100 parts or less but now it can be several thousand pieces.
I blend various powdered metal mixes for molding compacts,I install and set up molds in presses, I mold friction material compacts,do any shaping work on them using a lathe, band saw,and even hand files. I grind steel cores to the correct thickness, I set up furnace heats and run the furnace,I do all aspects of finishing the parts from checking hardness, density, and shrinkage to making a finished part using a band saw, coining press, slotter, groover, and grinder.
I am trained to run dynomometers, but all of ours were moved out to another branch of our company.
I can do every job under the roof of our plant, but now the management believes that I am just any button-pushing production worker. Kind of like using an expensive torque wrench to pound nails.

I make a living in the quality profession. Because of this, it is often my life. I work hard at balancing my work and personal life, but have come to understand that the balance is not day to day. You would drive yourself crazy taking that approach. It's better to look at the balance over a longer period.
