Prior to the end of WW2 in the Pacific theatre of war, Korea was under Japanese occupation. Shortly after (or before?) the official Japanese surrender, the Russians took possesion of the Korean peninsula, the Kurile Islands & Sakhalin island. This was in part due to the communist tendency to create satelite states directly adjoining their borders.

The Americans, in order to counter the Russians' move, requested for & got agreement to divide the Korean peninsula into 2 halves & take the more fertile Southern half, the line of division being the 38th parallel.

The most likely reason why the Russians allowed this division is that they would sooner or later reoccupy the southern half.

In June 1950, under Chinese support, the North Koreans invaded the South & pushed the defenses all the way south at the Han River (Pusan perimeter) & was then defeated & put on the run following McArthur's success at Inchon.

Truman's aim was to kick the North Koreans back across the border & end the war there & then. McArthur saw thing differently & pushed the fighting into North Korea & his foremost units were at the Yalu River when the Chinese intervened & sent in 100 thousand "volunteers".

If the campaign was ended following the ejection of the North Koreans from the South, the war would have ended in 1950 instead of an armistice in 1953.

Causes

The quick partition of Korea following WWII without taking the setup of the country into account. Each half was left without important resources.

The failure of both sides US and USSR to follow up on their agreements for post war Korea.

The statement by the US government that Korea was not the American line of vital interests.

Effects.

The start of the domino theory of reaction to Communism.

The first encounter of American forces against an effective eastern style ground force. The US encounter with Japanese forces in WWII had been against fixed point defense.
