I got a free computer from work. the problem is that it has a sign in window when you start in up and I dont have a user name or pasword. How can I reformat the hard drive to run something like a home edition if I cant log on to the computer to begin with? If possible I would also like to keep the Microsoft Office programs but that is not as nessisary as just being able to even use the damn thing. thank you in advance.

Most computer technician have a program from WinInternals called ERD Commander 2005 that has a Locksmith Utility feature that will allow you to change the password for the user accounts in the system.. If you cant get this software. It would probably be easier for you to just reload Windows XP Home CD right on top of it. If you dont need anything off of that computer I recommend to do a format to NTFS at the same time. Of course you need the XP Home keys to install and activate it. You probably can use another computer license if you dont have one. and activate it via telephone. all preinstalled XP license allows for 1 more license use.

Create a bootable floppy disc or bootable CD in another computer. Boot to the startup disc, to get to a command prompt.
*You will not be prompted for a password.

Once at the command prompt, type FDISK
At this point you can view, create or erase partitions on your Hard drive.

Erase all partitions, reboot the computer, enter fdisk again, create some partitions, and then format them using FORMAT /U at the command prompt.

Of course there are probably ways of getting a way to bypass the password box.

If you have got an Administrator account, you'll be able to difference or delete the password. Otherwise, making an attempt to entry the password might be viewed an try to compromise the safety of the procedure, that's a federal crime.

Try pressing cancel at the login screen. I think that glitch may still be in the 2000 platform from the '97 one. If not, I'd get someone to hack it for you :).
