The time, T seconds it takes a water heater to boil a constant mass of water is inversely proportional to the power, P watts, of the water heater.

When P=1400, T=360

Find the value of T when P=900

I get a huge number of T=453600000 - i'm sure i'm using the correct method and therefore this should be the correct answer- just checking to see if you guys get the same answer!

Thanks

T2/T1 = P1/P2, or P1T1 = P2T2
Since you know all but T2,
T2 = (1400)(360)/900 = 14*40 = 560

since P is inversely proportional to T

therefore,

P = k/T.... where k is a constant

hence,

k = 1400*360

k = 5040000

Now, we have to find the value of T when P = 900

P = k/T

therefore

T = k/9

T = 5040000/900

Hence, T = 5600

The result i obtained is T=560. I got this by the following calculation ((1400*360)/900). Observe the usuage of brackets carefully!!! Since the relation between the power and time is inverse. The slope of the straight line on the cartesian plane is negative.

T is inversely proportional to P.
therefore T=k*1/P, where k is a constant of variation.
therefore k=TP.
when P=1400, T=900
therefore k=1400*900=1260000.
when P=900, T=?
k=TP
therefore 1260000=T*900
therefore T=1260000/900=1400.
The answer is T=1400.

P : T
1400: 360
3.88889: 1
1764000000: 453600000
p= 1764000000 when t = 453600000
