I was fifteen. I'd been having all of the signs and symptoms (what I thought were anyway) since I was twelve. Looking back, I think I was just overexcited.

Anyway, I was babysitting, and had to use the restroom. I looked down, and saw that there was a small amount of blood in the toilet. So, I made a little makeshift "pad" out of a piece of toilet paper folded over a couple of times, which sufficed until I got home. My stomach was pretty crampy for the first couple of days, but that went away, and I got my next period almost right on schedule.

Even if you think that you're prepared, I'd imagine it will always come as quite a surprise. I know, every girl worries about when she's going to get it, every girl thinks "I'm going to be the only girl in the world who doesn't get one!" But, let me tell you... IT'LL HAPPEN. And it's something you'll have to deal with monthly for the next thirty to forty years.

It's fine to be excited about it... for most girls, it's the big "mark of becoming a woman." But, to be honest, after it happens, there's nothing too exciting about it... just a monthly inconvenience.

Just noticed a little brown stain on my nicks when I went to go to the toilet.

Didn't feel anything. No symptoms. No discharge. (are you sure you don't have an infection btw? That seems unusual for a first time)
I missed a month or two then got another. Missed a month or two then got another but this time it was quite heavy and not fun.

The first time you don't even need pads or anything. Tissues could probably last you your whole period.
They teach you in school and stuff to always have pads and "not be embarrased if you have to ask the nurse or a friend" Very worrying advice imo.
But there's barely anything. It probably wouldn't even go through your nicks. I was about 14. That's pretty late I think.

Ah but we are all different so I don't suppose these answers are helping you much huh? So different!

I had always prayed not to get my first period in school, so of course - I got it in school. It was pretty scary. My first one was very heavy, although I didn't have any pain until the second day, when I was a bit crampy. It was weird to see all the blood, and I sort of panicked a bit. My best friend was there (outside the toilet cubicle door, of course!) so she helped me, and she gave me a pad, and stuff. I was the most disorganised girl in the world and didn't have pads or a spare pair of knickers with me or anything so I went about for the rest of the day in a total mess. It was very uncomfortable and I felt as though everyone knew - of course, nobody had a clue! So my advice is to always have a pad with you, and perhaps even clean underwear, and be prepared for anything - heavy period, light period, lots of pain or none! Everyone is different. When your cycle starts up you'll soon learn what's normal for you. And even though it's been 12 years since my first period, I still remember the excitement and novelty of getting 'the first one' - that will wear off fairly quickly, but enjoy it while it lasts! Welcome to womanhood... :)

I'd only just turned 11, so was really embarrassed. It was fairly heavy but not painful. I was swimming competitively at that age so I had to learn to use tampons straight away as well. Don't worry about them, they're not so bad!

My little sister started hers when we were on scout camp, a 6 hours drive from home!

And if you get period pains, you have full sympathy. Some people think that period pains are ridiculus, but we know that they are sore.

I had stomach cramps,Its different from the usual stomach aches so I'm sure you will know!
Saying that my friends daughter started her periods last year and she has sailed through, she has no stomach cramps and has coped really well.
You will find every woman is different, do you have anyone close you can talk to ? You will need to be prepared so make sure you have some sanitary towels, perhaps keep one in your bag in case your period starts when you're out, there is nothing worse than coming on your period and not being ready!
Keep a diary of you're dates when you are on, so you will always know when to expect it and always keep yourself clean.
Anyway good luck & welcome to womanhood!!

Mine came way to young, I didn't know what was happening to me. I was at the movies with a friend and her dad and I was wearing a white skirt, I was 9. I don't remember any pain the first time, but it was quite heavy.
I wouldn't be in a rush.... it's just a monthly inconvenience.....

I can't really remember what my first one was like - too long ago now. But these are the things you'll probably notice:

Sore boobs
Craving for chocolate/sugary foods
Sudden mood swings, crying over nothing etc
Few spots around your mouth
Heavy, crampy feeling in your tummy

Try not to worry about it - it's no big deal, and you'll soon get used to it.

Pathetically small, but i was glad for that, now its the opposite! Don't worry about it, you have dischage for about a year first, most of your friends will also start at the same time as well so talk to someone who has started. Keep a pad in your bag for now just in case and don't worry about starting, you will start when your body is ready to.

it started with a dark discharge then went to blood. A bit of cramp but nothing major. Dont worry, you'll cope fine when it comes.
