Picasso said "Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life." Art is not useless! It is what makes ordinary life bearable! It is the beauty & meaning in an often ugly & seemingly arbitrary world. Art lives with us, in our homes, surrounding us with beauty. Art inspires us, educates, provokes, intrigues us. Whether you go to an art gallery, or open a magazine, go to a movie, everywhere you go, artists & designers have made their mark.
From realistic to abstract, visual art is very subjective & individual tastes vary. Someone may call a piece useless simply because they don't like or understand it. Just as musical tastes vary & what is pleasant to one person may be noise to another. Art may not be utilitarian in the way that say a fork is. You don't "use" it for anything except aesthetic pleasure. Though even the fork that you hold is in a sense a work of art. A designer conceived of it before it went into production. There is an art to everything. And what about music, theatre, poetry, literature, all of the arts? Entertainment is a huge industry. Everyone needs their escapes, needs to be swept away by music, a movie, a good book once in a while. This is also art. What would people do without TV, without books? Bare walls. Nothing aesthetically pleasing. Nothing in existence that wasn't purely functional. Nothing but the basics of life. Food, water, shelter, clothing (might as well wear sack cloths since there wouldn't be anyone to design otherwise)...
Imagine a world with no creativity. Imagine how bleak, ugly & uninspiring it would be. How cold & meaningless. Imagine if mundane existence was all that there was.
Art exalts us. Artists remind us what is extraordinary & beautiful in the world. They speak for us in a language we may not have access to, make us feel, make us think, make us laugh.
Art is divine.

Art does not mean the same thing to everyone, so it is useless for some people and quite useful for others.
What I find quite useless and hateful are people such as you who post anti-LGBT hatreds and discrimination in a public forum. You should be ashamed of yourself. I certainly hope you don't have the gall to call yourself a "christian," you hypocrite.

Art just means made. are all the artifacts of our civilsation useless? Most were made with very practical reasons in mind. Is art for arts sake useless? well if it is only for arts sake, but many good uses come from useless things. there are entertainment values. there are technical values. and there are social values. There are also the preservations of history by paintings and the use of art in advertising.
I think it might even be true that there is no distinction between what could be considered art, craft or trade. Even the distinction of arts and sciences blurs. And of course is politics an art, science, craft or just a trade.

I disagree, art means to me as a wonderful way to look at who I am by writing and drawing. Now other arts is something people who tell who they are, if you think art is useless, that is your way of saying you don't want to be in life. Art has many types, some I may like and some not. But they are all useful, maybe you should rethink the way you act about art, like the way I act about the enviorment.

Is it useless?---What is useless? Could there be a useless question or a useless answer? Think about it!
What does art mean to me? Art may be many things depending on your world point of view (even a splatter of spaghettis thrown on a wall or the aspect of the clouds in the sky). Art may be in the eye of the beholder and even from an utilitarian perspective it has its uses(Hollywood can attest to that).
Does it have many types? Yes. Useful and useless? Is this another useless question or my a useless response? Think about it!

To me Art is the form and Science the content. Every art has a science of its own and there is an art in every scientific endeavor. As such, to either agree that art is divine or that it is useless, would amount to an immature understanding of both science and art.

I am an art teacher, so NO, I don't think it's useless! Visual art sparks imagination and creativity in kids (and adults) and teaches hand-eye coordination, observation skills, pride in accomplishment, thinking outside the box......
On another avenue of thinking about it, there is "art for art's sake" and then art for more practical purposes: art in advertising, greeting cards, clothing and interior design, children's literature illustrations......lots of things can fall under the category of art, and our world would be pretty boring without it!

No. Today especially, much art is quite utilitarian. Art means different things - it depends on the specific art you're referring to. Yes, there are many 'types' of art.

Art is all around us. Engineering, architecture, surgery, fashion, handmade rugs, even what you "create" when you make dinner. The list goes on and on. It is so much more than sculpture and painting. But, I think the creative process is equally as important as the finished product. Painting is widely recognised as a very beneficial treatment for people with mental health issues. The stuff in galleries, worth thousands, has no function other than ornamental. Yet, art is still one of the highest trading commodities in the world.

No, only if you don't think or see or feel. It's all useful for whatever one sees any particular piece or form useful for. There is no rule book on what art has to be. It's wide open to the imagination
