Cool song...I think Hendrix did that too. They used a talk box which is a hose that is right up near the microphone, and whatever chords they hit on the guitar will take on the words the singer is saying into the hose, kinda like a hose kazoo hooked to the guitar.

Probably the two best examples of this are Peter Frampton's 70's hit "Do You Feel Like I Do" from "Frampton Comes Alive", and the 70's song "S-S-S-Single Bed" by UK band Fox. A device called a "voice box", which attaches to the guitar, and the guitarist "sings" into a tube, causes the sound. Incidentally, the Fox hit was written by Kenny Young, who also wrote "Under The Boardwalk".
