EDIT: ** rare side effect can cause chest pain!! **
see below!!
Some of the sickness and light headedness may be from quitting smoking - depending on how long it has been. Zyban has the same main ingredient as Wellbutrin which is a common anti-depressant that is usually very safe and very low in any side effects. Of course, side effects depend on the person and vary person to person and the pains in your chest, back and arms would concern me. Most people I know on this med have not had bad side effects but yours are listed so I would either stop it or call the ER # for your dr now and ask them what to do.
The main side effect of Zyban are : dizziness***, joint and muscle pain, dry mouth, jitters, rash, insomnia, change in appetite (usually less) , agitation & headaches. So - the sickness and light headedness could also be from the medication it sounds like.
I do know that using this med along with a patch can raise your blood pressure too much - which may cause other negative effects on your body but many use them together - but I just read on a site that you need to discuss it with your doctor if you plan to do this - don't know if this applies to you or not.
I would call your doctor as you should not stop any medication suddenly without talking to a dr. Sometimes it is not safe to just stop a medication suddenly - most antidepressants should be weened off of and while you are not taking it for this reason, it is the same exact ingredient ~ bupropion.
I did take Welbutrin for some time and it made cigarettes taste horrible (guess that is why they released it as Zyban :o) but I had this urgent need to pee - so I had to stop taking it..
I would call the emergency number for the office of the doctor who prescribed it for you - just in case.
This is who should NOT take it - do any of these apply to you?:
Who shouldn't use Zyban?
People with a history of eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia.
People already taking Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR or medications that contain buproprion hydrochloride.
People who have taken or are taking monoamine oxidize inhibitors (MAOI) medication for depression.
People with severe cirrhosis of the liver
People with a seizure disorder such as epilepsy. Bupropion hydrochloride can cause seizures in 1 in every 1000 people
Here are some less common side effects ~ sorry to make answer so long but wanted to make sure you got all of this info in case you didn't have it already:
These are generally mild and usually disappear after a few weeks. If you have difficulty sleeping, avoid taking Zyban close to bedtime and ask your doctor about reducing your dosage.
More common side effects may include:
Abdominal pain, abnormal dreams, anxiety, constipation, diarrhea, disturbed concentration, dizziness********, joint pain, increased cough, itching, nasal inflammation, nausea, nervousness, rash, sore throat
Less common side effects may include:
Abnormal thinking, allergic reaction, bronchitis, changes in taste, difficulty breathing, dry skin, fever, hives, hot flashes, increased appetite or loss of appetite, increased blood pressure, migraine, mouth ulcers, muscle pain, neck pain, nosebleed, ringing in the ears, shakiness, sinus inflammation, sleepiness, throbbing heartbeat
Rare side effects may include: ***********************
Chest pain, feeling of unhappiness, thirst, swelling of the face
Hope you feel better :) Congrats on quitting!

Contact your personal physician if you continue to have all these symptoms. Headaches, agitation, dry mouth, insomnia, and change in appetite are the most common side effects of Zyban.
It does not seem logical that you would have pain in your arms, chest and back and I wonder if this is a result of agitation.
It is definitely not easy to quit smoking. My father felt so bad that he thought he had some dread disease but he was never sorry that he stopped smoking. The benefits far outweigh the unsettling problems that you have for a short time.
I wish you the best of success as you endeavor to stop smoking and improve your health.

I took this years ago and quit. Stupidly, I started smoking again. Tried taking the zyban again but was having difficulty swallowing. Online a side effect said swelling of the throat and/or tongue may happen, so I stopped taking it, but it's the only thing that ever helped. Has anyone else experienced this?

im so glad you have asked this question. because i have zyban and i havent used it yet as my sister ended up in hospital with a severe allergic reaction so i just stick my patches on. i was thinking about starting zyban next monday and taking my patches off altogether but now im not so sure. it does sound like you are experiencing side effects from taking it and you can either stop taking it now or you can see if your side effects subside. if i was you id stop taking it and i dont think ill be taking it either

For the first few days of taking Zyban I was really agitated and couldnt sleep for the first 3 nights. I ended up coming off it after 2 weeks as I couldnt stand it. My doc wont put me on it again as he says its a one chance only.
If you feel that awful I would say come off it and try something else.

Everybody knows that smoking is dangerous. Smoking can damage your body, particularly your lungs, your brain, and your heart. The poisonous chemicals in a cigarette can cause death. Taking any kind of nictoine based product or medicine is dangerous to your health period. You should try to replace the bad habit with other better habits. Get a newspaper subscription, get a big bag of assorted candies and keep them around the house in various jars. Put magnets on the fridgerator that say "I am happy with myself" and "I feel much better now that I quit smoking". Your subconscious mind absorbs these messages and associates them with your conscious mind while you relax and sleep. You can also try subliminal music which is only a few dollars right here on the internet. Listen to it while you surf the internet and chat on yahoo. Listen to it whenever you get on your computer for the entire duration of your internet/computer activity. If you do this for an hour each day you should be able to reprogram your mind with positive messages to replace the negative smoking ideas. Try it, Im glad I did!! Ive beens smoke free since April 3, 2004 and still going strong. You and anyone else can do it to! So here is to a smoke free future!!
