It's never good to have a pretty package with nothing inside a brilliant conversationalist is much more appealing than a bag of crap wrapped nicely

I would say a brilliant conversationalist. I've dated "pretty men" before and got extremely bored with them in a very short period of time.
On the other extreme, a lot of unattractive people try to pump up their personality with "fat girl syndrome" simply because they have no self esteem and want to appear to make up in personality for what their looks seem to be lacking. Of course this great alter-ego that they have personified for public purposes seems to dwindle in the most crucial moments, leaving them only as a fat girl without any redeeming qualities at all.

Definately the brilliant conversationalist. When you are bored, or irritated with the lack of intelligence someone has, you start to notice all the little cracks and flaws in that pretty face. When you are intellectually engaged, homeliness can dissappear in interest and respect. One notices the finer details, that arch of the brow, the gleam in the eye, that quirk in the corner of their mouth when they are when they are trying t trip you up........

depends... if you want to be America's next Top Model, you should go for the pretty face... conversation (let alone brilliant conversation) is not really needed there.. :)
