I think any kind of suit would also work. Something dark, two or three piece. I think slacks and a sports coat would be a little to informal.

The nice thing is about a suit is that you will use if over and over again. Plus, you can by a decent suit for just a little more than a tuxedo rental.

My kids had a few " We are so over the prom" years and went opportunity shopping for pre-loved daggy stuff... as long as your date is happy with the theme, most parents would probably find your attitude a godsend moneywise!! Lately, where I'm from (regional Australia) more interest and memory of "Prom" is in the actual originality used in the mode of arrival at the event, than the memory of how much the attire was worth, or how out there it was!

Dress shirt with top two buttons open, sport jacket, slacks and dress shoes. You'll look sharp and feel comfortable at the same time and you'll avoid having to use an uncomfortable tie.

Full traditional Scottish dress! The kilt! The sporran! The whole nine yards! Nothing says "sexy and independent" like a man in a kilt.

You might want to leave of the sgian dubh though (the knife in the socks).

If you don't like tuxedos I'd wear a tuxedo. Since when is it up to you?

I thought by now that most people didn't wear them, so wouldn't any clothing that fits in be acceptable, or is there a dress code?

a long-sleeved polo, a tie, and some slacks
then a dress coat, not too fancy, but simple can just be perfect.
