Yep - there are some highly educated and intelligent people living on the streets. Whether they're coping with life or not is another matter. I've found that the ones who reach out and talk to you, also seem to make an effort to maintain basic personal hygiene, too. If someone really ponged, however, I don't know that I'd prolong the conversation, anymore than I'd stick around a well dressed businessman who'd neglected his deodorant, or who had bad breath.

Yeah i,d talk to someone dressed in rags & if genuine i,d get them a coffee & food.
Ozzy Osbourne said a long time ago Dont fu_k with anyone while your on the way up, Because when your on the way down you just may meet them again!!
Whats to say that one day its not you in the rags & the person once in rags is now a multi millionire, with the power to get you back on your feet.
And remembering your kindness just might repay you.
The think that fu_ks me off in London is the professional Beggers who sit there all forlorn & then @ the end of their shift drive off in a BMW.
If a person stinks either get down wind or just dont get too close
