They're great. Very warm and friendly and anybody under 50 speaks english pretty much.
Differences? They have much better public transportation there - no need to rent a car. Less crime than the USA, so you're very safe. Try to see lots of areas of the country - Munich, Bonn, Heidelberg and Berlin are all recommended.

Germany is very clean... that's something you will realize right away. Unfortunately like in all other countries- there are good people, but also rotten people (skinheads and other racists). If you stay long enough, you will not only see the good things, but also the very disturbing things about Germany. I survived everything that was bad about Germany.... and I really miss my family.... scattered all over Germany. Christmas is absolutely awesome. The "Weihnachtsmarkt" is one of the things you can't experience anywhere else like that.... the Christmas atmosphere is amazing. They eat Pommes (french fries) as a main meal on the go- you grab one portion of it at an Imbissbude (they are bigger slices sprinkled with a bit of salt) and most Germans prefer it with mayonnaise instead of ketchup-.... but some people mix mayonnaise and ketchup to dip their Pommes in.
One thing that's also different is that students don't get as many awards as in America. They don't believe in motivating a student externally..... the motivation is supposed to come from the inside-... so no A- student award... or Perfect attendance award etc. What you will also miss is the popularity thing that seems to be so important in the US schools.... nothing like that there.... but like in America almost everyone wants to be in style. Each season has a color that's in and those who can afford have an entire new wardrobe at each beginning of a season. Going to the disco in the weekend is something very exciting for the youngsters. American movies and songs are released there later than here. You will see a lot of people who dare to be different in their choice of clothing. A lot of youngsters there start smoking at a very young age. I went to a grammar school, where only four in my class didn't smoke. I had a classmate who started smoking at six ( he said so). You will see cigarette automats everywhere. Germans are punctuality fanatics... so you will see clocks everywhere,... even at bus stops, bathrooms, shopping streets>>> each city has a main shopping street. The stores are left and right of it. Big cities have malls like the ones in America.
You will love travelling by train. Travelling by train across the Rhine is an experience you should not miss. (best in winter!!!) You can see castles on hills, beautiful landscapes.... to die for!!!
I hope you will get to visit Germany soon.

I go several times a year on business. It's a wonderful country, but certainly different that the US. Society is a bit more orderly and they are much more formal. The pace of life is a bit slower as well (except on the autobahn where you WILL stay to the right as a matter of survival....:) ). Many Germans speak some English and I have always found them friendly and polite. If you do have a chance to go, I would put Munich and Berlin near the top of your list if you want to go and explore some world class cities with lots to do and see.
