My daughter and I just got a large box of assorted seashells at a yard sale. We would like to know the correct names. We have a few books and have found a few of the shells in them but there are many more. They are not local shells. Is there anyplace online where we might get some help? I know there must be thousands of different kinds of seashells and no site will picture them all, but any help will be appreciated.

Yes! An excellent website for those interested in seashells is:

One of the features on this site is a Shell Identification Forum. Just go to the website, click on "forums" (this page is sometimes a little slow loading) and you will see the Shell Identification Forum. There you can post a picture of any seashell or group of seashells and they will be identified by knowledgeable people. You can also post a description of a shell without a picture but of course the chances of a correct ID are much better with a picture.
