You could nominate the peregrine falcon, in a stoop (ca. 200 mph) or a cheetah (70 mph for about 100 yards). However, since you are talking about a car on a freeway, I assume that you are talking about sustained speeds on a horizontal surface. That eliminates them both. You would have to go to the sight hounds for something to keep up with a car. If it were a matter of broken-field running, an afghan could outperform the car but freeways are mostly straight. Azawakhs (no, they are not recognized by the AKC but they are a distinct breed) can hit 50 mph, possibly faster. I'd go with the saluki, the fastest-running animal over a three-mile course. If you want a longer course than that, go with the car. On the other hand, during rush hour ....

It is the "Duck hawk" or peregrine falcon when diving it turns into a heat seeking missile making the cheetah and some other fast gazelles look slow.

peregrine falcon, the fastest animal on earth.
the cheetah is only the fastest animal on the ground. in the sea, its the sailfish. in the air, the peregrine falcon at 300km/h. or 185mph.
this bird flies at a high altitude, and dives at a steep angle towards its prey (usually other birds). when it the falcon reaches its prey, its outstretches its talons to grab the prey. the impact kills the prey instantly.

the falcon i believe; during dives they can achieve speed of >300km/h. On land it is cheetah; short spurt of 100 km/h; i believe in sea it is the sailfish; around 68 miles/hour.
