i live in western massachusetts and im wondering if anybody saw them or knows what the bright flashes of light were that occured on friday 10/20/06 just before 10 pm est. the flashes of light looked sort of like an explosion of some sort. Could anyone possibly educate me on this?

and no it wasnt lighting. i thought that at first but the flashes were a white color and had red green blue and gold in it.

Bright flashes that light up the sky are typically caused by a transformer blowing up, or failure of some other electrical componant.

Occasionally they can also be caused by a large meteorite blowing up in the upper atmosphere or a fireball passing by.
