from a previous question I answered:
Let’s assume that you mean our species: Homo sapiens and not some of the other human-like fossil forms such as Homo neanderthalensis, Homo floresiensis, or Homo erectus.
You will get two sets of answers to this question: (A-about 195,000 years ago and B-about 6000 years ago).
The oldest well-dated Homo sapiens skulls have been found in Ethiopia in Africa. The argon/argon radiometric dating method and analysis of sedimentary layers correlated with climate information put the age of the skulls at about 195,000 years old(source A). A few years earlier, skulls from another Ethopian site were dated as between 160,000 and 154,000 years old by the argon/argon method and the chemical correlation of volcanic layers method (source B). Biochemists studying changes in the DNA in human mitochondria (passed on by mothers), came up with an estimated date of 170,000 years ago for the time when a common a common female ancestor lived on the Earth. If you want a more detailed summary of current scientific thought about the early history of Homo sapiens and other Homo species, go to the New Scientist article at Source C url or a timeline at Source D.
Many religious people who believe that all parts of the Bible are completely accurate descriptions of the Earth's history, believe that the Earth is only about 6000 years old and that humans first appeared on Earth very soon afterwards. For instance, when they read that God created the Earth and all life in six days, some people interpret that time as six 24 hour days. They also believe that the writers of the Bible didn't leave out any generations when they recorded some of the family trees of people in the Bible. So, some people believe very strongly that the Earth and the first people on Earth weren't around before about 6000 years ago. On the other hand, many equally religious people (including many Christians) read the same words in the Bible and interpret them as beautiful, poetic descriptions of God's creation-but they don't have a problem also accepting the scientific evidence that the Earth is billions of years old and that the first humans appeared on Earth more than 100,000 years ago.

Most people don't realize that the writers of the Bible were not linguist or scientist. They wrote down what they saw the best way they knew how. That left gaping holes in their story that modern day man could pick apart using modern day analysis. However, their idea of a supreme being is not altogether absurd.
Can anyone define what is a miracle? I'm sure that most people would agree that a miracle is something that doesn't normally occur in nature, yet that is exactly what life is.
What's that you say?It happens everyday!Well we cannot make life out of nothing. We must first start with something that is alive. We can alter it, we can change it, but we cannot make life out of nothing. That is a miracle! Only god can make something out of nothing. That is exactly what he did on this planet. He made something out of nothing! He made life!
You can argue that mother nature did this; Ok, but the evidence suggest that mother takes life.Show me the evidence that proves that your mother nature created life.Put together all the elements necessary to create life and see what happens. If there isn't life already there, there will be no life unless it becomes contaminated from an outside source.
The only entity that has done this successfully is god.Life's origin begins with god.Life is the greatest evidence of the existence of god.Life is a miracle that scientist have been trying to recreate but they cannot do it without some already existing form of life.

hard to say but the answer above is the best GUESSTIMATE
that would be the FIRST answer - note that some people even today have lots of variation from the MODERN NORM
TRIED TO REPLY TO YOUR E-MAIL BUT IT HAS NOT BEEN CONFIRMED - YOU HAVE TO CLICK ON THE LINK YAHOO SENT YOU
HOMO SAPIENS HAVE BEEN IN THE FOSSIL RECORD FOR 130,000 YEARS - PHYSICLY THEY ARE MODERN HUMANS - BUT WE ARE MORE THAN BONES AND THERE IS A LOT OF DEBATE ON WHEN AND HOW THE MIND DEVELOPED - I THINK THAT YOU CAN SAY THAT THE START OF LANGUAGE ( UNKNOWN ) IS WHEN WE STARTED
THE REFERENCE ABOVE IS TO THE VARIATION IN MANS PHYSICAL FORM - in the future an alien culture who digs us up may look at the difference between a Pygmy and a Watusi the way we see Homo Sapiens and Neanderthal

Homo sapiens is considered the beginning of "modern" man ("sapiens" means wise or intelligent). It has lived from about 90,000 years ago to the present.

There is no such thing as 'modern' man. Mankind has been around since God created Adam and Eve on the 6th day, about 6000 years ago.
If people say surely longer than that then:
Why are there so few few human remains around?
Why is recorded human activity only a few thousand years old?
Why is there so little salt in the sea? - not enough for millons of years.
Why is there so much evidence that the earth is young?

And the answer is... 60,000 years.
Though 200,000 is also an acurate number,, see site.
200,000 is probably the most accurate number.
