I am told that you can never tell when you are actually in a dream, but you feel as if the dream is reality - until you wake up. Well, ever since I was about 8 years old, I was able to figure out that I was actually dreaming - in mid-dream. Not too long after I figured out how to tell I was dreaming, I figured out how to "remove" myself from a dream and wake myself up - at my own will. I don't know how I do any of this, but I just do it. Some dreams it has felt like I have full conciousness during the dream and I can almost control what goes on in them. I can usually remember my dreams too - that is when they happen, because they don't occur like they used to, but I can still do all of those things. Am I mentally abnormal, or is that rule of dreams only true for most people?

Those dreams are called Lucid Dreams, a lot of people have them. It is commen for people who have Lucid Dreams to rember them and be able to stop them. The problem is most people who have them, dont get as good a sleep quility because the brain is active (hince why you can tell you are dreaming) so your REM sleep isnt as deep, is to short ect.
I dont want to sound mean but your not really gifted, most people while Lucid Dreams at one point or another in there life, some people can even go threw periods of Lucid Dreaming and normal dreaming. I like Wikipedia has a decent page on it.

I do this too. This is exactly what I do. I usually end up just controlling the outcome so that I can stay asleep. I know when I am dreaming all the time. I did not do this when I was real small, but I started to around 10 yrs. old. I was sick of having nightmares or the same bad dreams over and over. I told myself I would start using my head when something scary happened. I told myself if something was not possible or not a normal thing in my life, that I must be dreaming. Ever since then I have dont these things with dreaming.

This is a normal phenomena called lucid dreaming. Researchers can pinpoint when a person realizes they're dreaming because their eyes break from the normal REM (rapid eye movement) associated with the dreaming cycle and begin moving irradically as if the person were awake.
Lucid dreams can be completely lucid, where the person is 100% aware that they are dreaming, or partially lucid, where they are only aware for a few moments befor they forget again, or are partially aware.
When a person suddenly realizes they're dreaming, their consiousness awakes (as opposed to the sub-consiousness only being awake as it is in a normal dream). Scientists aren't exactly sure why this happens or how, but some people can cause it to happen by associating an every day activity with a reminder to check to see if they're dreaming and wait until they dream they are doing that activity. Some people can even control their dreams once they become lucid and have exploited this oddity to the extent of disrupting their sleep cycle.

I have lucid dreams frequently. Very useful when danger comes my way...In my dreams ,it has become a standard thing to be able to fly like Superman at my own will. I can also do telekinesis and move objects by will alone Jedi style!!! Usually something has to trigger the lucidity in you, to make you WAKE UP* IN *THE DREAM .!
Last one I remember I was at my old job, then passed in front of the mirror of a picture booth. As I saw my long hair( all shaved now) in the reflection, I told myself: Hey! my hair is not supposed to be long like that! That means I must be dreaming!!! As I realized that, two goons came to me to intimidate me. I jumped up in the air and did the Matrix move floating still in mid-air!!! As I stayed in the air for several seconds the 2 morons got scared and left. Then I made myself appear in the public bathroom to check my face again and there I was all shaved again. I then open fausset only by looking at it ! Then I looked again in the mirror again , I made it break, I started to panic and then woke up. Whoa, what a nite that was...

Its normal, but I think many people don't experience this type of dreaming as often, maybe, as you seem to. I believe it is probably nothing more than some sleep quirk you have for some reason. Maybe part of your consciousness doesn't really completely go to sleep.

This is my experience as well. It can be great. It can also be bad if I am having a nightmare. I hope there is an expert here who can provide you with a definitive answer. Good luck.
