Toward the middle.

I put the opening toward the middle because has a more polished look - but judging by the answers here it is personal preference. (my first job was as a maid in a hotel - but I only remember being a stickler for hospital corners at the bottom of the bed.)

Sometimes pillowcases have decorative edges that you might want to have seen - so I guess in that case you would face them out.

The link below that doesn't make mention of which direction on the pillows at all:

OK - enjoy your day! :)

Hey Charles - I sent a message to the link below and they updated the page to include which way the pillows should face...click on the link again and re-read it. then go all the way down to the bottom - they updated the info on the page about the pillows today!

Always towards the outside, as the pillows should touch in the middle so that there is not a gap for the bedspread to sink into. The openings should either be tucked under or smoothed flat.
I worked as a maid for years, and have made beds more times than I care to count.

Here is another perspective, in Nursing school we were advised to have the pillow cases face the opposite direction from the door. It probably does go along the lines of a smooth look and all but that's how I was taught.

Tradition has the opening toward the outside. Since your doing this for the first time which way is your top sheet? Facing the floor or ceiling? Assuming their is a right (front) and wrong (back) side to your sheets. Tradition has the right side of your top sheet facing the floor (right side of the top sheet to the right side of the bottom sheet) The bed covering (quilt, bedspread, blanket, etc.) covers the wrong side of the sheet, so when you fold back the coverings you get into bed between the right side of the sheets (both bottom & top sheet). I hope I explained that okay. Just enjoy your guests, nobody really cares.

I always put mine outwards.

Every hotel I have stayed in does the same thing.

It just looks neater and gives a more polished off look.

Who knew making beds could be so much fun, lol!

I always point them out, I don't know if it's proper, that is just what I always do and what looks best for me.

Try googleing it...maybe Martha Stewart knows!! :)
