I would 100% take the extra time and just pull up the old floor. You have a better chance of not ruining the floor later (pieces will crack under the weight eventually).
We laid a floor over top of another floor based on the request of the homeowner and 2 months later had to go in and pull up both floors and re-do the whole thing! They paid extra money, we got extra money....
Good Luck!

If your gonna do a job, you may as well do it right the first time rather than creating problems by doing it half a..ed.
I vote to remove the old tile, because if you don't than any flaws or faults in it will damage the new layer with time.
Also I think the other answer about the weight being an issue is a good one to consider.
Good Luck

You can tile directly on top of the old tile, so long as the old stuff is still stuck really good. Any loose pieces, just restick them.
You don't want to use thinset, use a multi purpose mastick or use thin set but mix it with liquid latex instead of water.
The tile on top will actually be protected from hairline cracks by the tile on the bottom.

depends on what you want to put over it and the condition it is in
if you are putting new tile down then you need to consider the overall weight of the floor ( not hard to exceed the joist capacity if it is a kitchen due to appliances )
new tile only needs a surface that is level and that the mortar will adhere to - you can 'roughen' the surface and lay a new mortar bed BUT REMOVING THE TILE IS BEST 99% OF THE TIME

Not too sure but rip it up, put some plywood down the grab some
UNICLIC foam & go from there. Its worth the extra effort in the long run.
