Some amplifiers come with distortion effects - but they are rudimentery at best.
The best thing is to get either both the wah wah & distortion pedals or to get a multifects pedal (which is more expensive but also comes with a host of other effects like chorus, digital delay, metronome, etc)

usually the amps with built in effects are crap....i go with pedals...(stomp boxes)...the multi effects units suck...for example i have a boss metal zone for distortion, an old D.O.D. flanger, a boss chorus and a morley wah that i hardly use..some say a daisy chain of pedals is cumbersome...but its the simplest way to go and ya can always add or remove effects to the flavor of the day...never hurts to have a box full of pedals...i have 40 that im always friggin with
